"Straight Outta Compton" writer Jonathan Herman has been tapped by to rework the script for "Ghost in the Shell," DreamWorks Pictures' live-action adaptation of the classic cyberpunk anime.

Scarlett Johansson is attached to star in director Rupert Sanders' film, which will go into production early next year in New Zealand.

The Hollywood Reporter notes that Herman was also brought in to overhaul "Straight Outta Compton," which became a surprise hit for Universal Pictures.

Debuting in 1989, Masamune Shirow's sci-fi manga "Ghost in the Shell" centers on Public Security Section 9, a counter-cyberterrorist organization in near-future Japan led by Major Motoko Kusanagi. The manga inspired animated films, video games and an animated television series.

"Ghost in the Shell" opens March 31, 2017.
