Based on Masamune Shirow’s seminal cyberpunk manga and the subsequent anime franchise, “Ghost in the Shell” centers on Public Security Section 9, a counter-cyberterrorist organization in near-future Japan led by Major Motoko Kusanagi.
According to Variety, Asbæk is thought to play Batou, the second-best melee fighter in Section 9, and second in command to Kusanagi.
Rupert Sanders (“Snow White and the Huntsman”) is attached to direct from a script that’s being reworked by “Straight Outta Compton” writer Jonathan Herman. Production is set to begin early next year.
Cast as Pontius Pilate in MGM’s remake of “Ben-Hur,” Asbæk will also play Euron Greyjoy in the sixth season of HBO’s “Game of Thrones.”
“Ghost in the Shell” opens March 31, 2017.
