“The Lion King” may have found its Timon and Pumba. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen are in talks to voice the fan-favorite characters in Disney’s upcoming live-action adaptation of “The Lion King.”
Rogen will play the lovable warthog Pumbaa, while Eichner will lend his voice to the wisecracking meerkat Timon. In the 1994 animated classic, the original roles were filled by Nathan Lane and Ernie Sabella. The characters, who are widely recognized as the film’s comedic relief, are also known for singing “Hakuna Matata.”
Rogen and Eichner join a cast that includes Donald Glover as Simba and James Earl Jones, who will reprise his role as Mufasa. Rogen is known for his appearance in a number of Judd Apatow films and has also voiced characters in animated films including “Kung Fu Panda” and “Monsters vs. Aliens.” In addition to his roles in “Parks and Recreation” and “The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” Eichner is known for hosting his own TV series “Billy on the Street.”
The film will be directed by Jon Favreau, who known for directing the first two “Iron Man” films and — more recently — Disney’s live-action adaptation of “The Jungle Book.”
Today, the release date for “The Lion King” was announced as July 19, 2019. In addition, Disney revealed 2019 release dates for “Star Wars: Episode IX,” the fifth “Indiana Jones” film and“Frozen 2.” “The Lion King” will be one of many Disney live-action remakes, which include “Alice in Wonderland,” “Beauty and the Beast,” and “Maleficent.”
