Mark your calendars: The Rapture takes place this summer, at least as far as HBO is concerned.

The cable network has announced its new drama The Leftovers will begin production early in 2014, with an eye toward a summer debut. The show comes from Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof, and is based on the novel of the same name by Tom Perrotta, also a writer on the series.

In an extensive interview with Entertainment Weekly, Lindelof revealed The Leftovers takes place three years after "The Departure," an event that saw 140 million people suddenly disappear from Earth in what may or may not have been the biblical Rapture.

"The traditional way of telling this story is you're in immediate aftermath of this event," Lindelof explained. "Dropping into these people's lives three years later and saying 'This is the moment in which they get back to their lives as they were or they decide that they can't get back to their lives as they were,' that's a much more interesting idea."

Lindelof further described The Leftovers as if "Lost and Friday Night Lights had a baby and then that baby was severely neglected." That description's certain to raise at least a few flags, good and bad.
