Update: We incorrectly identified director David Sandberg in the original version of this story. We apologize for the error.

New Line's "Annabelle" sequel has found a director in "Lights Out" helmer David Sandberg.

Variety reports that "Annabelle 2" is being produced by Peter Safran and James Wan, and comes from a script by Gary Dauberman, who wrote the original film and the direct-to-video horror feature "Bloodmonkey."

A spinoff of "The Conjuring," "Annabelle" grossed more than $250 million on a $6.5 million budget. The story follows the terror caused by a possessed doll -- the titular Annabelle -- in California in 1969. It's unclear at this point if the original cast -- Annabelle Wallis, Ward Horton and Alfre Woodard -- will return for the sequel.

"Annabelle 2" hits theaters on May 19, 2017.
