A Marvel Comics fixture for 40 years, the vicious assassin Sabretooth hasn't been nearly as enduring on the big screen, where he was portrayed by Tyler Mane as a member of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants in 2000's "X-Men," and then by Liev Schreiber in 2008's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine." Schreiber previously revealed he'd been approached to reprise the role in the critically "Logan," but that unfortunately didn't pan out.

In a new interview with Variety, the "Ray Donovan" star addressed early discussions with star Hugh Jackman and director James Magnold, lamenting, "I would have loved to work on it."

"It was very difficult given 'Ray Donovan’s' schedule, and I think they went a different direction as well with story," Schreiber said. "I think it’s a terrific movie. I’m just very proud of Hugh and the way that he handled himself with that franchise and that character. It was a great experience to be involved with one of them and to get to work with them. I had mixed emotions when I heard that he was going to retire."

"Logan" co-writer Scott Frank recently recalled that Mangold had come up with an idea for Logan, Laura and Professor X to turn to Sabretooth for help in the gambling town, a seismic shift in the character's role in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine." "I wouldn’t swear to it, but we thought that would have been an interesting thing to do," he said. "And then for whatever reason we didn’t do it.”

Schreiber joked in 2015 that when he heard rumors the film might be inspired by "Old Man Logan," "I thought, ‘Well, you know there’s Old Man Logan, there could be Old Man Sabretooth … the two of us with walkers.”

"Logan," which has earned nearly $224 million worldwide, stars stars Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Dafne Keen, Boyd Holbrook and Stephen Merchant.
