Fox has offered The Hunger Games veteran Liam Hemsworth the lead role in its Independence Day sequel, ID Forever, TheWrap reports.

The long-developing follow-up to the 1996 blockbuster was greenlit in November, with original director Roland Emmerich but without Will Smith. However, Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman are expected to reprise their roles.

Michael B. Jordan (Fantastic Four) was reportedly courted for a lead role as far back as 2013.

The original film, which grossed $811 million worldwide, centered on a disparate group of people who gather in the Nevada desert in the wake of a devastating alien invasion and -- along with other survivors across the globe -- orchestrate a daring counter-attack on July 4.

No details are known about the sequel's script, which was rewritten by Carter Blanchard (Glimmer).
