LEGO Batman Movie Director in Talks For Nightwing Film

Warner Bros. is reportedly developing a Nightwing film to be directed by “The LEGO Batman Movie’s” Chris McKay.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, McKay is still in negotiations to helm the feature, based on a script by Bill Dubuque (“The Accountant”).

The news arrives mere weeks after McKay publicly expressed interest in directing a live-action entry in the DC Extended Universe. When a fan on Twitter suggested launching a petition to sway studio executives, the filmmaker replied, “That’s nice […] but I’m going to go in and see those guys and pitch myself and go from there.”

As THR points out, McKay already has some experience with Dick Grayson, as the character is featured as Robin in “The LEGO Batman Movie,” where he’s voiced by Michael Cera.

In the planned Nightwing film, Grayson will be older, and presumably at least a little more serious. It’s of course the identity an adult Dick Grayson adopted in 1984 when he gave up his Robin guise as he matured and attempted to move out of Batman shadow. In the subsequent decades, he’s done just that, maintaining several solo series and leading such DC Comics teams as the Teen Titans, the Titans and the Outsiders.

The planned Nightwing feature is only the most recent expansion of Warner Bros.’ increasingly ambitious live-action DC Films slate. The studio in late 2014 announced 10 films — from “Batman v Superman” to “Justice League” to “Cyborg” — taking its DC calendar well into 2020. However, since then it has added such projects as the “Suicide Squad” sequel and its spinoff “Gotham City Sirens,” “Justice League Dark,” “The Batman” and, now, “Nightwing.”

How Dick Grayson will be introduced into the DC Extended Universe remains to be seen. In “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” the costume of a dead Robin was depicted in the Batcave, but that was later confirmed by Warner Bros. to belong to Jason Todd. It’s not outside the realm of possibility that “The Batman” could set up “Nightwing” as a spinoff, but that’s obviously just speculation at this point.

A veteran of Adult Swim’s “Robot Chicken” and “Moral Orel,” McKay made his feature directorial debut with “The LEGO Batman Movie,” which has grossed $182.4 million worldwide since its release on Feb. 10. The film has finished its first two weekends at No. 1 in the North American box office.

The next entry in the DC Extended Universe arrives June 2 with director Patty Jenkins’ “Wonder Woman,” starring Gal Gadot and Chris Pine. It’s followed Nov. 17 by Zack Snyder’s “Justice League,” starring Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa, Ezra Miller and Ray Fisher.
