Writer Brian Michael Bendis explained his reasoning for teasing a romance between Jon Kent's Superboy and Saturn Girl in the current run of Legion of Super-Heroes-- he's keeping the title moving forward and not wedded to the past.

In an interview with ScreenRant, Bendis explained he is following the lead of the characters themselves. This means being free to develop different relationships than those readers saw in past versions of the title. He praised artist Ryan Sook, inker Wade Von Grawbadger and colorist Jordie Bellaire for the hard work that they "have been giving every single page of this book." However, "We now know that all the people are going to remember or care about is Jon and Saturn Jirl's [sic] potential romance."

"I know there are some classic Legion fans who want to see the classic Legion romances, and you will always have those in the back issues," Bendis said, "But these characters are taking themselves in new directions." He went on to tease that the upcoming Legion of Super-Heroes #10 will further dive into the future of Jon and Saturn Girl's relationship.

Legion of Super-Heroes began its current run in November 2019, the first ongoing Legion series since the New 52 initiative. Jon Kent, son of Superman and Lois Lane, was aged to his teens and recruited onto the team.
