Victor Garber is one of the most seasoned and experienced actors in the Arrowverse, and as Dr. Martin Stein, one-half of the superhero Firestorm, he's brought charm, wit and a father's sensibility to Legends of Tomorrow's time-traveling ship, the Waverider. With the show's third season ahead of him, Garber sat down with the press at Comic-Con International to discuss what the future holds for Stein, a journey that will include some soul searching about his duties as a father, his role as a superhero, and whether he should go back to 2017 to be with his family.

"Martin is questioning everything," Stein said of his character's state of mind when Season 3 kicks off. "He’s questioning his participation in this journey. He had such high hopes, he was so childlike in his enthusiasm in the journey. Poor Jefferson was a victim of that. Now he’s questioning that and wondering, since they made such a mess of things. So the third season is really about correcting all of the mess they made.

Some of that course correcting will revolve around Stein's daughter Lily, who is played by Christina Brucato. And though she is Stein's own flesh and blood, she's also an aberration, having been born only due to the doctor meddling with his and his wife's timeline during a trip to the past. "The introduction of Lily, I was so happy about. Christina [Brucato], who plays Lily, is so fantastic," Garber enthused. "I love playing with her, it’s just so comfortable. We just did a scene last week so I know she’s coming back into the show. That’s part of what Stein is going to be dealing with. I’m here, but shouldn’t I be there? [What about] Clarissa and Lily? Then you find out more about the family. For me, that’s the fun of the part. I love the personal relationships, every actor is unique and extraordinary and I feel very lucky to be a part of that."

As for his character's other on-screen relationships, there are two in particular the actor enjoys exploring. "For me last season, every time I would read the script I thought [Stein and Heat Wave] was the classic odd couple. Dominic [Purcell] is a sublime actor. He’s so gifted and funny and I love working with him. The relationship with Jefferson has evolved and Franz [Drameh] is a phenomenal actor, for young, 24-year-old guy is amazing."

"My favorite things are when I have a scene with an actor I love," Garber added. "It doesn’t really matter what period of time it is. That’s incidental to what’s going on in the moment. I’ve had so many great experiences with the actors on the Waverider. I would say the scene with Einstein with John Rubenstein was really fun in that period."

Premiering on the CW on Tuesday, October 10, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow’s third season will star Arthur Darvill as Rip Hunter, Dominic Purcell as Mick Rory, Caity Lotz as Sara Lance, Brandon Routh as Ray Palmer, Nick Zano as Nick Heywood, Victor Garber as Professor Martin Stein and Franz Drameh as Jefferson “Jax” Jackson.
