SPOILER WARNING: This article contains major spoilers for "The Legion of Doom," the latest episode of "DC's Legends of Tomorrow."

Reverse Flash's time is almost up. In "The Legion of Doom," the latest episode of "DC's Legends of Tomorrow," Damien Darhk and Malcolm Merlyn finally learned why Eobard Thawne is after the Spear of Destiny. As it turns out, Thawne is trying to escape Black Flash, which is the Speed Force's manifestation of Death.

If Black Flash looks familiar, that's because we met him back in the Season 2 finale of "The Flash." The character was created when Zoom — Barry Allen’s speed-stealing nemesis — was pulled into the Speed Force by Time Wraiths. The Time Wraiths physically transformed Zoom into the Black Flash, and it seems as though "Legends of Tomorrow" has set him loose on Thawne.

There's a good reason why Black Flash wants Thawne. After all, Eddie Thawne -- Eobard's ancestor -- intentionally killed himself with the knowledge that Eobard would be removed from the timeline. However, Thawne was saved by his connection to the Speed Force; he spent some time with Barry in "Flashpoint," where Barry held him prisoner so that he couldn't kill his mom, but he didn't find respite when Barry set him free. Since then, Reverse Flash has been running from Black Flash, terrified that -- if he stays in one place -- that it will catch up with him.

Darhk and Merlyn learned this after they realized Thawne didn't stay in one place very long and subsequently trapped him long enough that he revealed that Black Flash was plaguing him. With the promise that he would treat them as equals, the two former League of Assassins members helped him stall Black Flash by trapping it in a bank vault. As it turns out, Black Flash can only sense Thawne if he's using the Speed Force, so the Legion was able to lure Black Flash to the bank, where they had set up their elaborate trap.

As such, Thawne wants the Spear of Destiny to alter history without the consequence; that is to say, by using the Spear, he won't face the wrath of Black Flash or the Time Wraiths. With the Spear, Thawne could cement his place in time.
