"The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" debuted new footage in a trailer Thursday night during The Game Awards 2016 pre-show. It's the next installment in the popular Nintendo video game franchise.

The trailer begins with a tear falling from an eye painted on a piece of cloth fabric. As the tear hits the ground, it gives birth to massive trees and blades of grass. Next, the scene cuts to Hyrule, the primary location of the "Legend of Zelda" games. We see towns with buildings and local workers tending to their farms.

The tone and musical score shifts with the introduction of a flying ship high overhead. Link, our heroic protagonist, storms into action on a horse, slashing creatures with an ax. Princess Zelda makes her first appearance, holding something in her hands as she walks slowly. What was once a beautiful land lays in ruins after an attack from a mysterious dark castle. We end with a shot of Link kneeling beside the clenched fist of Princess Zelda.

Scheduled for release in 2017, "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" is available for preorder on Nintendo Switch and Wii U.
