No franchise gets fans gossiping more than Star Wars. Its return to the big screen with The Force Awakens was extremely successful, but it left moviegoers with a lot of questions about the next chapter in the trilogy. Who is Rey? Why is she so powerful? What happened to turn Kylo Ren to the dark side? Why did Luke choose exile? Will Finn be ok after his injuries are healed? And those are just a small handful of the long list. The first The Last Jedi trailer showed Rey training with Luke and the resistance continuing to fight the First Order. Nothing Earth shattering but, it of course sparked even more questions about Finn’s fate, Rey’s relationship to Luke and Snoke’s origin.

The most recent trailer was full of jaw-dropping moments that amped up fan enthusiasm and led to an endless number of both plausible and completely ridiculous theories. Die hard Star Wars lovers are speculating on everything from Rey’s parentage to Snoke’s identity to the slightly creepy relationship between Rey and Kylo Ren. There are even some who think Han Solo isn’t really dead. We’ve compiled some of the best and craziest The Last Jedi fan theories floating around the Internet.

15 FINN AND POE END UP TOGETHER

Finn and Poe Dameron face to face in Star Wars

Since the moment Finn rescued Poe Dameron from the First Order in The Force Awakens fans have been shipping them as their new favorite Star Wars couple. Their fast friendship and connection, as well as the on-screen chemistry between Oscar Isaac and John Boyega only fanned the flames that these two were destined to be the next Han and Leia.

In The Last Jedi, they apparently go on a secret mission to a First Order base together, keeping them separate from the rest of the action in the film. Sound familiar. Star Wars does have a real representation problem when it comes to LGBTQ characters, so why not show understanding and support for fans in that community by having two of its most important characters become a couple.

14 LUKE DIES, MAKING REY THE LAST JEDI

luke

There’s been a lot of speculation about what the title The Last Jedi means. Who is the last Jedi? Is it Luke, Rey or even Leia? Is it good or bad to have no more Jedi? The questions caused by these three words are endless. Every fan has a theory, but maybe it’s really as simple as we all think. Maybe Luke dies in the course of the fight against the First Order and Rey is now the last Jedi.

Perhaps Luke, like Obi-Wan, decides that if Snoke strikes him down he will only become stronger. It’s a common theme in Jedi training, with Qui-Gon, Yoda, and even Dooku’s deaths serving to advance their pupils or replacements. Luke’s death could be what spurs Rey on to truly leave her other life behind and embrace her Jedi destiny.

13 LUKE, REY AND KYLO REN FORM A NEW FORCE ORDER

In the newly released trailer, Luke makes it clear that the Jedi must die. In Revenge of the Sith, Palpatine tells Anakin that there are more powers of the Force that don’t adhere with the strict Jedi code. There's a theory floating around that believes that Luke’s beliefs place him in between the light and dark sides of the Force, making him a “gray” Jedi.

Following his inability to kill Leia, Kylo Ren will be filled with doubts, causing him to question everything he believed. He will help Rey escape Snoke and together with Luke, the three will form a new more progressive way of using both sides of the Force. Of course, this hinges on all three of them surviving through the end of Episode IX.

12 BENICIO DEL TORO IS DUCAIN

benicio del toro-large

After meeting and falling in love with a whole new batch of characters in The Force Awakens, fans will now get a few more politicians and rebels to meet in The Last Jedi. Notably Benicio Del Toro is playing DJ, whose official description calls him “an enigmatic figure whose tattered, threadbare clothes and lackadaisical attitude conceal a sharp mind and expert skills.”

The role was initially said to be a villain, but Del Toro has gone out of his way in interviews to not call him a bad guy. He accompanies Finn and Rose on the mission to the First Order base and it’s never really clear where his loyalties lie. Could the D in DJ be short for Ducain, the man who originally stole the Millennium Falcon from Han Solo? The franchise is down a cocky, smuggler, who knows how to fly the Falcon.

11 KYLO REN WILL LOSE A HAND

Kylo-Ren-TLJ

This isn’t so much a theory as it is a certainty. It’s a Star Wars movie, which means someone is losing a hand. Those are the rules. Yes, it’s true, it could be Rey. However, in The Force Awakens Rey was already shown to be a far superior Force user than Kylo Ren. And that was without any training.

She dominated Ren in their last lightsaber duel, and frankly she would have finished him if Starkiller Base hadn’t begun exploding. Rey is a survivor, so she will do what it takes to protect herself and her friends. Obviously, if she has time to train with a real jedi and hone her skills, she should be able to really handle Kylo Ren in a lightsaber battle.

10 REY IS A DESCENDANT OF OBI-WAN

obi wan-ewan mcgregor

Rey is an unusually powerful Force user, so it stands to reason that somewhere in her family there must have been someone in whom the Force was just as powerful. One theory making the rounds is that Rey is Obi-Wan Kenobi’s granddaughter. Almost nothing is known about Obi-Wan’s life on Tatooine as Ben Kenobi.

Are we supposed to believe he spent all his time in his secret home hanging out with Sand People and Jawas? We think that's probably not the case. He’s still a young man at the end of Revenge of the Sith. There’s no way he spent the next 20 years alone in a cave. While he may not have settled down, he absolutely could have become romantically involved with someone and unknowingly started a family.

9 REY IS A CLONE OF LUKE

rey-last jedi-lightsaber

Yet another guess about Rey’s backstory was found at Star Wars Celebration. Perhaps she’s Luke’s daughter, but she’s a clone, not a daughter in the traditional sense. It would answer some of the many questions that surround her. Apparently the early drafts of The Force Awakens opened with a shot of Luke’s severed hand. This would suggest it played a role in the story at some point.

If Rey is a clone of Luke, it explains how she was connected to his lightsaber, is such a good pilot without ever actually having flown anything and also had an instant bond with Han and Leia. This theory also posits that the cloning process upped her midichlorians, making her strong with the Force. It does leave the question of who cloned her and for what purpose?

8 POE IS HAN AND LEIA’S OTHER SON

8. poe and leia

The first thing we learn about Poe Dameron is that he’s the best pilot in the resistance. He’s not shy about saying it, plus it’s written in The Force Awakens crawl. He’s a hero with swagger and is fearless in the face of the First Order. Sound familiar. Yeah, he’s pretty much the perfect mix of Han and Leia.

These traits, plus the fact that Leia takes a special interest in him in The Last Jedi make it seem obvious that he’s another branch on the Skywalker family tree. It’s completely possible that they’re keeping it secret to protect him and so he can make his own name in the galaxy, free from the pressure of his famous parents. There’s got to be a lot of people who would love to kill Han Solo and Princess Leia’s son.

7 KYLO REN AND REY ARE SIBLINGS

7. kylo ren and rey

There’s clearly a weird connection between Rey and Kylo Ren. But, what if it’s not that weird and they’re just another set of Skywalker siblings? There's a theory put forth the theory that Kylo Ren, in his last decent act, protected his sister during the assault at Luke’s Jedi training academy. In her flashback when Rey sees Ren killing someone in front of her, maybe he was actually saving her. Then to keep her away from everyone, he left her on Jakku.

Luke, thinking he failed his nephew and niece went into exile, while the loss of two children tore Han and Leia’s family apart to the point they don’t even talk about their daughter. This explains why Ren was desperate to train Rey and not kill her. It could also explain why Luke sees the same power in Rey that he once saw in Ren, and why it scares him.

6 REY GOES TO THE DARK SIDE, BUT NOT REALLY

Rey-TLJ-lightsaber

There’s a theory that Kylo Ren is a double agent working against the First Order from the inside and perhaps he and Han faked his death. While that seems unlikely, maybe it could be true for Rey. After training with Luke, she realizes they will never defeat Snoke in a straight up fight, so she pretends to turn to the dark side. Maybe Leia finally sees that her son is lost and wants Rey to go in and get revenge for what happened to Han.

What if that final scene in the trailer is really her accepting Ren’s hand because she plans to become a spy for the resistance? She’s already proven she’s stronger than him, so he wouldn’t be able to read her mind. Her perceived turn would make Luke seem to be the last Jedi.

5 BENICIO DEL TORO IS AN OLDER EZRA FROM REBELS

ezra star wars rebels

Fans have been anxious for a real concrete link between the films and the popular animated series. The timelines make that difficult, but with the final season of Star Wars Rebels coinciding with the release of The Last Jedi, maybe everyone finally found a way to make it work. What if Benicio Del Toro’s mysterious DJ is really an older, hardened Ezra Bridger?

DJ is known to be untrustworthy, yet familiar with both sides of the war. If Ezra’s friends died fighting the Empire, he would feel guilty and possibly revert back to his con-artist roots, choosing to leave all the fighting behind and only look out for himself. It would be a very cool way for the TV series and movies to finally be tied together.

4 SNOKE IS ANAKIN’S FATHER

4. supreme leader snoke

Any Star Wars fan worth their salt knows that Anakin Skywalker is pretty much an immaculate conception. Shmi Skywalker confirmed as much to Qui-Gon in The Phantom Menace. Some fans took this idea and expanded it into a theory that could affect all three trilogies. The mystery around Anakin’s conception is supposed to explain why he is so powerful. He has more midichlorians than any other jedi.

While Palpatine couldn’t manipulate midichlorians in this manner, maybe Snoke figured out how and he is the one who created Anakin. If this is true, Snoke is the most powerful Force user in the galaxy, which is a scary thought. Having ultimately failed with Anakin, since Darth Vader gave in to his good side, perhaps Snoke decided to try again...

3 REY IS A CHOSEN ONE LIKE ANAKIN

rey star wars

Most of the fan questions about the new Star Wars films surround Rey’s parentage. Is she Luke’s daughter? Maybe she’s Han and Leia’s daughter and was hidden away after Kylo Ren’s attack? Everyone is wondering how such a powerful Force sensitive child could go unnoticed by the whole galaxy for so many years. Unless someone very influential instructed her to be protected and unnoticed until the time was right.

If Snoke tried once again to create the perfect Force entity, he may have used the same idea of placing the child on a faraway planet, hidden from the galaxy, then manipulating events to draw her into the fight, so she discovers her abilities. This also means Rey and Anakin are siblings and Luke is her nephew.

2 SNOKE IS REALLY EMPEROR PALPATINE

emperor-palpatine

Though the idea that Snoke could be a resurrected Emperor Palpatine has been debunked by most fans, there are still quite a few who think it’s a possibility. It’s true Emperor Palpatine was incredibly powerful and could have figured out a way to preserve his consciousness, waiting until the right time to form the First Order and once again conquer the galaxy.

And if he could in the process turn his enemies’ son to the dark side and destroy Luke Skywalker’s new Jedi Order, that would be an added bonus. If there’s one thing we learned from the prequels, it’s that Palpatine was extremely patient in putting his plans in place. There’s no reason why he wouldn’t be just as patient the second time around.

1 SNOKE WANTS TO POSSESS KYLO REN

Kylo Ren with Lightsaber using the Force

There’s a line in The Force Awakens where Han Solo tells Kylo Ren that Snoke is just using him for his powers. Ren doesn’t believe him and in the moment it sounds like a parent trying to get his son away from a bad influence, but what if we should take it literally? What if Snoke is just using Kylo Ren? Not just for his power but also for his body.

Snoke is huge as a hologram, but upon closer inspection, he really looks more like a frail, old creature. So, suppose he’s just been building up Kylo Ren and separating him from his family so it will be easier for Snoke to possess his body when the time comes. This could lead to an internal battle, where Ren lets himself be killed to defeat Snoke, and secures his redemption.
