Veteran comics creator Larry Hama has had a pretty impressive career, one that has spanned five decades in the industry. In addition to his editing tenure at both Marvel and DC, he served a tour of duty in Vietnam and sustained a brief acting career that included a role in "M*A*S*H." Nevertheless, Hama is probably best known for his epic run writing -- and occasionally penicilling -- most of Marvel's 155-issue "G.I. Joe" series back in the '80s and early '90s.

Now, Hama fan Bill Murphy of Fresh Monkey Fiction has launched a Kickstarter campaign that seeks to celebrate the "G.I. Joe" scribe's work on the franchise in the most fitting way imaginable: through the creation of a custom-designed "G.I. Joe" Larry Hama action figure.

The 4-inch figure will feature an original Hama head sculpt created by Nick Whitmore as well as an original art card by Adam Riches.

As of March 8, the project has 18 more days to run and it has already raised $21,940, well above its initial goal of $6,000. This money will be used fund the main production run of the Hama figure. The next target is $25,000 worth of pledges, which will unlock the stretch goal of "Hama Grape Soda" stickers for supporters pledging for the deluxe figure set. The deluxe set will include the standard Hama figure and box and an additional metal Larry Hama trading card and "mystery accessory."

Given Hama's military background as an explosives specialist, his freelance writing and drawing career and his study of Iaido, the Japanese martial art of swordsmanship, that accessory really could be just about anything.

The Larry Hama action figure Kickstarter ends on Monday, March 27.
