Video-game sensation Lara Croft is heading back to the big screen in a reboot of the Tomb Raider franchise that will center on the character’s origin story.

Heat Vision reports that producer Graham King’s GK Films (The Departed, The Town) has acquired the film rights from Square Enix Ltd., and is aiming for a 2013 release. King will produce with Tim Headington.

The archaeologist-adventurer was famously portrayed by Angelina Jolie in two movie adaptations, 2001’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and 2003’s Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, which grossed a combined $432 million worldwide.

Released in 1996 by Eidos, now part of Square Enix, Tomb Raider became one of the most successful video games of its time, with the original and its sequels going on to sell more than 35 million units. Square Enix subsidiary Crystal Dynamics announced plans in December for a new Tomb Raider game focusing on the origin of Lara Croft.
