Focus Features has debuted a lovely full-length trailer for "Kubo and the Two Strings" that wonderfully lays out the premise -- and the tone -- of Laika's new stop-motion animated adventure.

The feature directorial debut of Laika head Travis Knight, the swashbuckling fantasy is set in a mythical ancient Japan, where scruffy, kindhearted Kubo ekes out a humble living while caring for his mother in their sleepy village. It’s a quiet existence, at least until a spirit from the past catches up with Kubo to enforce an age-old vendetta, forcing him on the run from gods and monsters. His only chance for survival rests on finding the magical suit of armor worn by his dead father, the greatest samurai the world has ever known.

Opening Aug. 19, 2016, “Kubo and the Two Strings” features the voice talents of Charlize Theron, Rooney Mara, Ralph Fiennes, George Takei, Matthew McConaughey and Art Parkinson.
