"Kung Fu Panda 3" earned $41 million in its opening weekend, unseating Leonardo DiCaprio's "The Revenant" from the top of the North America box office.

The DreamWorks Animation sequel also smashed the January opening-weekend record for an animated movie set in 2014 by "The Nut Job," which raked in $19.4 million. The Jack Black comedy adventure also scored the largest-ever opening for an animated film in China with $57 million.

"The Revenant" slipped to second place in the domestic box office, with $12.4 million, with "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" following in third with $10.8 million. "The Finest Hours" and "Ride Along" rounded out the Top 5 with $10.3 million and $8.3 million, respectively.
