Knowledge Waits: How to Pronounce the Name of Thor’s Hammer Plus Other Tricky Comic Book Pronunciations

This is the latest in a feature where I just share some bit of comic book history that interests me. Here is a collection of all of the installments in the feature so far.

Reader Cardell G. wanted to know how to pronounce the name of Thor’s Hammer, Mjolnir. So I figured I’d answer that question and tackle a bunch of other tricky comic book pronunciations!

MJOLNIR

Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir, is pronounced myawl-nir (“nir” sounds like “near”).

NAMOR THE SUB-MARINER

Nay-mor the Sub-Mar-in-er (like the baseball team, the Seattle Mariners)

KA-ZAR

Kay-sar

(From X-Men #10:

)

MISTER MXYZPTLK

Mix-Yez-Pittle-Ick

(From Action Comics Annual #10:

)

DARKSEID

TIGRA

Tie-gra

Here‘s the Avengers: United They Stand cartoon with her name.

DORMAMMU

Door-ma-moo

JOHN CONSTANTINE

Constan-tyne

ATROCITUS

Like atrocity, only with “is” at the end. Ah-tros-ah-tis

RA’S AL GHUL

Here’s a tricky one. Neal Adams says “Rahs Al Gool,” while Denny O’Neil and Julie Schwartz says “Raysh Al Gool.” The Arrow TV series intentionally used both interchangeably.

Okay, that’s it for this time. Feel free to e-mail me other names you’re curious about and I can feature them in a future edition! brianc@cbr.com!
