As the happy controlled chaos that is New York Comic Con calms down, Brooklyn is gearing up for a comics bash of its own. KingCon Comics and Animation Convention comes to the Brooklyn Lyceum for its third go-round this coming November 3rd through 6th.
This year's outing will be co-curated bycontributor to indie cult-fave POOD, Image Comics' NEXT ISSUE PROJECT, and pop pundit at HiLoBrow.com Adam McGovern and will feature dozens of the best artists, writers and animators from the borough and beyond, includingDondi co-creator Irwin Hasen; legendary Green Lantern writer and Batman author/editor Denny O'Neill; respected author, former Marvel editor, and Senior VP of Education at Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art (MoCCA) Danny Fingeroth discussing his new book STAN LEE UNIVERSE; award-winning author of GREEN LAMA, UNBOUND Adam Garcia; DC COMICS HOUSE OF MYSTERY artist Josh Adams; Daredevil and new Green Arrow author Ann Nocenti; Laika author Nick Abadzis; and Julius Knipl creator and New Yorker regular Ben Katchor.
Panels will include a discussion of Comics Outside of Comics, Spidey: Then and Now, a Look into the World of Small Publishing, a Spotlight on G.I. Joe Writer and Bucky O'Hare creator Larry Hama and the (Dare) Devil is in the Details panel, where artists and writers working on long-running franchises discuss the challenges and myths of established "continuity" as well as a host of other topics. This year's con will also feature contributors to the funnypaper of record, POOD, exploring the state of lo-tech comics self-publishing and the creative process of some of its indie-star and superunknown creators; a special KingCon edition of live weekly talk show Comic Book Club, featuring Alex Zalben, Justin Tyler and Pete LePage; and a Thursday night screening of Daniel Zana's documentary The Vinyl Frontier, followed by a panel with some of the best-known vinyl toy artists in America and from abroad.
For the under-12 set the 2011 outing of KingCon will feature a Drawing Workshop with Rick Parker, whose art has appeared on titles from Spider-Man to Beavis and Butthead and Barbie; the return of the popular SmurfShop with professional Smurf-ologist Matt Murray; and a live reading of the book Sarah's Simple Hope with children's author Boc Casino. Attendees and kids of all ages will also be treated to two performances of Save the Day Productions' hilarious comic book staged reading "Superheroes Who Are Super".
