The more I read about Portland, Ore. the more it sounds like some sort of comic book super city, where everyone is sitting around writing comics, or writing about comics, or talking about comics, or simply reading comics as they sip overpriced lattes out of recycled cups under giant Redwoods. Kind of like a mix of Hicksville and the Ewok village from Return of the Jedi. Anyway, I hope to go there someday*, but I don't know if the real thing can live up to the image I've built up in my head.
I imagine, though, that Floating World Comics in Portland is probably cooler than the image I have in my head, if not for any other reason than they come up with cool projects like this.
The comics retailer has created four issues of a newspaper called Diamond Comics that's filled with comics from around the world and that they distribute at their store and around town at coffee shops, record stores and various other establishments. While the typically print about 2,000 copies, they have the opportunity to have it distributed in the Portland Mercury, so they need to raise some money to cover the added cost for 8,000 more copies.
That's where Kickstarter comes in, as they're offering a variety of prizes for folks who agree to help them out. For $10, for instance, you can get a PDF of the fifth issue, while higher donations can get you everything from a physical copy to some limited edition prints. *I actually went there once for a job interview, but only got to stay for a few hours, so I don't feel like I really got to see the city or do much besides drive across town and people-watch at the airport. Adidas headquarters was pretty cool, though.
