Following the recent news that 20th Century Fox had registered an “X-Force” movie domain name (with “X-Force” co-creator Rob Liefeld confirming the film’s development on Twitter), The Hollywood Reporter reports that “Kick-Ass 2” writer/director Jeff Wadlow has been tapped by the studio to pen the script for the project with Lauren Shuller Donner attached to produce. While no director has been announced, THR notes Wadlow is penning the script with an eye to direct.
It’s currently unknown which version of the mutant spinoff team that Wadlow plans to adapt — though Liefeld’s recent comments tend to indicate that it may be the first version of the team to show up in Marvel Comics in the ’90s led by futuristic soldier Cable. The original team consisted of “graduated” characters from “The New Mutants,” including Cannonball, Boom Boom, Sunspot and more. More recent versions of “X-Force” cast the team as a black-ops squad of some of the X-Men’s most dangerous heroes led by Wolverine, who would definitely give the movie a more tangible connection to Fox’s current stable of X-Men films, but Liefeld’s recent Twitter comments seem to limit that possibility.
“I can pretty much eliminate some sites [sic] suggestion that the [Peter] Milligan X-Statix stuff is in the mix,” Liefeld said via Twitter. “An X-Force film is Cable. Is Deadpool.”
In addition to “Kick-Ass 2,” Wadlow has written two episodes of A&E’s “Bates Motel” and is currently writing the script for the film adaptation of Valiant Entertainment’s “Bloodshot.”
