Long rumored for the project, it's now confirmed that Lord of the Rings and Star Trek actor Karl Urban will be suiting up for the title role in Judge Dredd — and no, he won't be taking his helmet off.

“The main thing about Dredd is that it’s a fantastic comic that was completely messed up 20 years ago," producer Andrew Macdonald told Empire. "Our idea is to make a very hard, R-rated, gritty, realistic movie of Dredd in Megacity, so we’ve got to get the tone right. He’s not going to take off his helmet. His bike is going to feel real. He’s going to hit people and it’s going to feel real."

Directed by Pete Travis from a screenplay by Alex Garland and design work from The Losers artist Jock, Judge Dredd is set to shoot in Johannesburg alongside the team who worked on Neil Blomkamp's District 9, according to Macdonald.
