Darkseid, portrayed by Ray Porter, was originally supposed to appear in the theatrical release of 2017's Justice League, including the flashback scene where the armies of Man, Themyscira and Atlantis take on his invading forces. However, he was cut from the final version of the movie, with Steppenwolf taking his place in the invasion scene. Since the film's release, both director Snyder and Porter have been vocal about the lost opportunity and urged Warner Bros. to let them restore Darkseid to the film in the form of the Snyder Cut.

Darkseid is not the only new villain set to appear in the film. Jared Leto's Joker from the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) film Suicide Squad is also expected to show up, although Leto refused to confirm the news in a recent interview. Joe Manganiello, who appeared as Deathstroke / Slade Wilson in the theatrical film's post-credit scene, also filmed new scenes for the HBO Max project.
