Columbia Pictures’ remake of the 1995 fantasy adventure Jumanji has found a writer: Zach Helm, the man who penned Stranger Than Fiction. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Matt Tolmach and Bill Teitler are producing the film.
Based on Chris Van Allsburg’s popular picture book of the same name, the Joe Johnston-directed original starred Robin Williams as a man who’s released from the jungle world of a supernatural board game after 26 years only to be forced to play again.
The new version reportedly is going to be “an update for the present,” but it’s not clear whether the movie will be a direct remake or act as a sequel in some way.
At least Helm seems well-suited to the project, as Stranger Than Fiction and his other movie, Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium, both had a sense of whimsy needed to make this movie work.
