Relativity Media is finalizing a deal for Julia Roberts to star as the Evil Queen in The Brothers Grimm: Snow White, giving director Tarsem Singh’s movie an edge in its race against Universal’s adaptation of the classic tale.
Deadline reports that Roberts’ agreement is expected to be complete within hours, giving the film its first star. The rival Snow White and the Huntsman, set for release on Dec. 21, 2012, has grabbed much of the spotlight in recent weeks with reports of negotiations with Charlize Theron to play the Evil Queen, Viggo Mortensen as the huntsman and Kristen Stewart as Snow White.
“Usually, rival picture races end when one project either lands a big star or makes it into production first,” Deadline’s Mike Fleming writes. “That’s happened on such films as the Oliver Stone-directed Alexander, which ended the Alexander the Great film Baz Luhrmann was prepping with Leonardo DiCaprio.”
Let’s not forget that there’s a third Snow White project in the mix: As we reported last week, Toy Story 3 writer Michael Arndt has been tapped to pen a new draft of Disney’s Snow and the Seven, which sets the tale in 19th-century China.
Written by Melisa Wallack (Meet Bill), The Brothers Grimm: Snow White is described as an “edgy, modernized reimagining” of the classic story that reportedly begins with Snow White’s stepmother killing her father, and the young girl fleeing the kingdom only to return with seven contentious dwarves to reclaim what’s rightfully hers.
