Judging (Marvel’s October) Books By Their Covers

Marvel’s October Solicitations are up, so let’s make some prejudgements based just on the covers (as we all love to make prejudgements, don’t we?)!

Let’s begin!
___________________________________________________

Ferry has had a few decent, but not exactly striking covers, in his stint as Ultimate FF cover artist.

___________________________________________________

Hmmm.

I dunno, I have to say, I don’t really totally dislike this Land cover for Ultimate Power.

The idea itself, though, seems a bit off.
___________________________________________________

I must say, Ultimate Carnage looks pretty cool on this cover.

___________________________________________________

Wow, this Ultimate X-Men variant cover by Michael Turner is awful.

There is no way this isn’t the worst cover of the mont…..

…..

Never mind.
___________________________________________________

CIVIL WAR!
___________________________________________________

This strikes me as another “snowball idea.” “Hey, we always TEASE about Sue going off with Namor, why not ACTUALLY DO IT!”

Weak Turner cover.

I wonder what is so secret about the McNiven cover.
___________________________________________________

GUNSHOT WOUND COVER MONTH (see Dr. Strange)!!

___________________________________________________

Cool idea by Juan Doe for this Civil War: X-Men cover.

However, his execution is surprisingly sloppy.
___________________________________________________

These Civil War: Runaways/Young Avengers covers by Jimmy Cheung are all well-drawn and all, but don’t exactly get across a point.

___________________________________________________

Cool Epting cover for Captain America.

I better see, sometime in Civil War, Cap and Iron Man actually fight!!
___________________________________________________

This Adi Granov Fantastic Four cover reminds me of the time this friend of mine, when I was a kid, was a huge Johnny Storm fan, so he poured gasoline on to himself, which he got from this freaky guy we knew who liked to fly model airplanes.

It was messed up.

The Beyonder showed up and everything.
___________________________________________________

Man, Cap…I would get that cleaned before using it again.

___________________________________________________

Doesn’t this look like Iron Man Ãœber Alles?

Man, Iron Man’s rep sure is taking a beating.
___________________________________________________

That’s what you GET for having Araña guest-star.

Oh, and Julia Carpenter as a super-villain?

LAME!!!
___________________________________________________

What in God’s green Earth is that Jarvis thing?

Is that a blow-up doll?

What kind of kinky shit is Tony Stark into!?!?

By the by, with the Sentry’s tower sorta built into Avengers Tower, doesn’t he sorta HAVE to stay on the team?

Or else it would make for some awkward elevator rides.
___________________________________________________

Too bad about the “no Civil War covers in the Top Five,” or else this Ariel Olivetti Punisher War Journal would definitely be in the running!

___________________________________________________

Yep.

That IS Wolverine popping his claws.

Duly noted.
___________________________________________________

Cool Wieringo cover for Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.

He’s been on a nice roll recently.

___________________________________________________

I’ll give Clayton Crain this much credit for this Sensational Spider-Man cover.

It certainly is striking.
___________________________________________________

Two very cool Spider-Girl covers!

First, #0

Next, The Amazing Spider-Girl #1!

Ron Frenz – looking sharp!

How odd, by the way, was it that they didn’t mention the #1 in the letters column for #100?
___________________________________________________

Clever Miyazawa cover for Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane.

___________________________________________________

….
….
….
….
…..
……
……..huh…wha?!…I’m awake, I’m awake! Sorry, I was just too enthralled with this action-packed Gabriel Dell’Otto Annihilation cover! Packed with the action of Ronan…sharpening his armor…

….
….
….
….
___________________________________________________

Cool Irredeemable Ant-Man cover.

Andy Kubert stepped up his game this month, but Hester still rules triumphant!
___________________________________________________

The Space Phantom!?!?

Cool Beyond cover, I GUESS…but it’s the SPACE PHANTOM!!!

He’s just a joke I make (“I hope the explanation involves many Space Phantoms!”, etc.)!! I never actually expect to really show-up!

What’s next, a robot duplicate sent by Kang?
___________________________________________________

Man, gotta give it up to Linsner.

I don’t know exactly what he’s thinking with this Claws cover, but it’s certainly interesting.
___________________________________________________

Cool Marko Djurdjevic cover for Blade.

A step down from the first issue, though.

And another “Alas, poor Yorick…” cover!!
___________________________________________________

I didn’t know Captain Ultra was an Eternal!!

___________________________________________________

This Texeira cover for Ghost Rider is a bit sketchy.

___________________________________________________

Oooh…sexy!

Take it off, 1602 Doom!

Take it all off!
___________________________________________________

The end of an era.

A Stuart Immonen Nextwave cover I did not like.

So sad.
___________________________________________________

Wow, Greg Horn, with the drawing and everything!

Not bad at all!
___________________________________________________

I am also pretty impressed by this Mike Deodato Squadron Supreme cover. Where’s Frank off to?

___________________________________________________

Is this Thunderbolt cover an homage?

___________________________________________________

Pretty ood-looking Paul Pelletier cover for Exiles.

___________________________________________________

Nice DRAWING by Daniel Aja.

But for the cover of Giant-Sized Wolverine?

Not so much.
___________________________________________________

This is a pretty sorry cover by Paco Medina for New X-Men.

It barely looks like he put any effort into it at all.
___________________________________________________

Juggernaut vs. dragons.

Not something I’D think of, but pretty cool looking New Excalibur cover, nonetheless. Good job, Michael Ryan!

___________________________________________________

Oddly sketchy cover from Billy Tan.

I like the layout, though.
___________________________________________________

Good Sook X-Factor cover.

Especially as it is sans-stupid-Wolfsbane head.
___________________________________________________

Impressive Chris Bachalo X-Men cover.

He makes Rogue look pretty nifty.
___________________________________________________

Not a bad Arthur Suydum cover for Son of Satan, but it doesn’t exactly scream, “Son of Satan” to me.

___________________________________________________

Pretty cool Bradstreet Punisher cover.

___________________________________________________

Kyle Hotz sure can draw him some zombies.

___________________________________________________

A bit of a let down by Cameron Stewart on this Marvel Adventures: Spider-Man cover.

Especially with such great characters! Hawkeye AND Frankenstein’s Monster!!
___________________________________________________

Pretty straightforward Sean Chen Marvel Adventures: Avengers cover.

___________________________________________________

Nicely stylized Marvel Adventures: Fantastic Four cover by Kano.

___________________________________________________

I’m sure Criminal will rock hardcore.

The cover for #1?

Not so much.
___________________________________________________

Mike Thibodeaux does a good job on this cover for Jack Kirby’s Galactic Bounty Hunters.

___________________________________________________

This cover by Oeming pretty much defines the style of Powers.

I approve.
___________________________________________________

HONORABLE MENTIONS
___________________________________________________

Joe Quesada has really taken these Wolverine: Origins covers as a bit of a challenge.

Some nice work on this one.
___________________________________________________

Lee Weeks picks a great homage for his Stan Lee Meets the Thing cover.

And clever idea by Jeph Loeb!
___________________________________________________

This Jo Chen Runaways cover made me smile.

___________________________________________________

Wow, Gary Frank sure made Namor look awesome there.

I wonder how Panther won’t get his ass handed to him.
___________________________________________________

TOP FIVE!
___________________________________________________

5. I love covers like this Union Jack one!

You don’t see them much nowadays, showing samples of what will happen inside.

I dig Sabra’s new look, too.
___________________________________________________

4. A bit static, as far as covers go, but this Lee Bermejo cover captures the setting so stunningly that it really draws the reader in.

I am very impressed.
___________________________________________________

3. Marko Djurdjevic continues his strong showing on these X-Men: First Class covers.

A nice contrast job.
___________________________________________________

2. This was a toughie. I REALLY liked this Agents of Atlas cover.

Look at how freaky this cover is!

However…
___________________________________________________

1. Marcos Martin

And an intriguing cover idea.

That’s enough for this Doctor Strange cover to be my #1.

Man, do I love me some Marcos Martin.

Okay, that’s it for me, folks!
