When it was revealed last month that Joss Whedon was in talks to direct a Batgirl film for Warner Bros., fans almost immediately began suggesting actresses to play the DC Comics heroine. Rumors even began to circulate that "The 100" star Lindsey Morgan had landed the highly coveted gig. However, Whedon insists that while it's still too early to consider casting, the role will probably go to a relative unknown.

While attending the premiere for Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2," the director expressed his excitement to see "a girl in the cowl," and downplayed casting speculation. "I don't have my eye on anybody," he told Variety. "I feel like I'm creating this character. I'm in a dialogue with her, and then we'll see who joins that later on."

Asked whether he has a "name" in mind to play Batgirl, Whedon replied, "I doubt it'll be 'a name.' I think this is somewhere where you'll go an find Batgirl, and then you cast her. I'm not against movie stars; they're great. But you need somebody who's going to be just right.

"And a situation like this, the name carries a lot of weight," he added, "so it's not as critical, so ... definitely Vin Diesel."

Whedon's Batgirl will be based on the version from DC Comics' New 52, the 2011 run written by Gail Simone. The film doesn't yet have a release date.

Beginning with 2013’s “Man of Steel,” Warner Bros.' DC Extended Universe continued in 2016 with “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and “Suicide Squad." Following “Wonder Woman,” which opens June 2, fans will see the release of “Justice League,” “Aquaman,” “The Flash,” “Cyborg” and “Green Lantern Corps,” spotlighting the rest of DC’s flagship heroes.
