Jem and the Holograms, the 1980s animated television series about the adventures of a singer and her band, is being developed as a live-action film by G.I. Joe: Retaliation director Jon M. Chu, horror producer Jason Blum and talent manager Scooter Braun.

The trio announced the project today in a video at JemtheMovie.com, where they asked fans for submissions to help them write the music, design the costumes and select the cast. “Sort of like Kickstarter, but rather than asking for money, we’re asking for your creativity,” Chu said.

Produced by Hasbro, Marvel Productions and Rainbow Productions, Jem and the Holograms aired in syndication from 1985 to 1988, following the exploits of music-company owner Jerrica Benton, her pink wig-wearing singer alter ego Jem and her band the Holograms.
