Fox and Bruce Willis have turned to Max Payne director John Moore to helm Die Hard 5, Deadline confirms, replacing Noam Murro, who left the project in July for Warner Bros.’ 300: Battle of Artemisia.
According to the website, Moore rose to the top of a studio wishlist that included Attack the Block‘s Joe Cornish, Fast Five‘s Justin Lin, Drive‘s Nicolas Winding Refn and Lucky Number Slevin‘s Paul McGuigan. Apparently Willis, who’s very hands-on in the selection of directors for the action franchise, “was swayed by Moore’s love for the John McClane character, and his grasp of how to shoot practical, non-CGI-heavy action scenes.”
As reported previously, the script by Skip Woods (X-Men Origins: Wolverine, The A-Team) sends McClane and his son to Russia, where they’ll presumably stumble into some kind of local conflict.
Deadline says Fox hopes shoot in Russia before Willis has to move on to the sequel to the hit 2010 comics adaptation RED. With original director Robert Schwentke heading up R.I.P.D. at Universal, Summit Entertainment has begun the search for a replacement.
