Deadline has learned that "Star Wars: The Force Awakens'" John Boyega has signed on to play the lead role in the upcoming "Pacific Rim" sequel. Boyega will play the son of Idris Elba's character, who starred in 2013's "Pacific Rim."

The sequel will be directed by Steven S. DeKnight, who was previously the showrunner of Netflix's "Daredevil" television series. Guillermo del Toro directed the original "Pacific Rim" film. The film is expected to begin filming in the fourth quarter of 2016, most likely after Boyega finishes production on "Star Wars: Episode VIII." Boyega's next "Star Wars" film, which will be directed by Rian Johnson, started production in February.

While del Toro isn't directing the sequel, he will be attached to the film as a producer and shared his thoughts on the casting with Deadline. “I am very proud and happy to welcome John into a fantastic sandbox," said del Toro. "The 'Pacific Rim' universe will be reinforced with him as a leading man as it continues to be a multicultural, multi-layered world. ‘The World saving the world’ was our goal and I couldn’t think of a better man for the job.”

Boyega also shared his enthusiasm for his new project on Twitter.
