It may have seemed the fate of Kilgrave was sealed by the end of Jessica Jones' first season. After all, the villain (played by David Tennant) was pretty definitively killed by Jessica (Krysten Ritter) in the pair's climactic battle when the much-tormented hero snapped the mind-controlling Kilgrave's neck.

But this is superhero storytelling, and even though Marvel's Netflix series tend to skew to a more realistic approach to the genre than their big screen cousins, there are any number of tropes Jessica Jones can utilize to resurrect its main bad guy.

The news, which dropped via Entertainment Weekly's debut of a photo of Tennant (in his signature purple-hued clothing) and Ritter on the set of the series, didn't bring with it any details on how Kilgrave survived his fate. Indeed, despite Tennant's presence in the second season, who's to say he did survive? After all, Kilgrave's powers were mental by nature, so it's just as plausible for him to maintain a lingering presence inside of Jessica's head form beyond the grave as it is for him to have used his mind control to trick her into thinking she killed him when, in fact, he got away scott free and in one piece.

The Netflix series, which will be entirely helmed by female directors this season, is expected to continue production through September.

Based on the Marvel Comics character created by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Gaydos, Jessica Jones stars Krysten Ritter as the troubled super-powered private investigator. Ritter can next be seen as Jessica Jones on The Defenders, which arrives this week on Netflix.
