Ahead of the expected trailer debut this week, Universal Pictures has unveiled a slew of new images from "Jem and the Holograms," director Jon M. Chu’s live-action adaptation of the 1980s animated series.

The photos arrive courtesy of USA Today, which speaks briefly to Chu and star Aubrey Peeples about bringing the offbeat Saturday morning cartoon/Hasbro toy commercial to the big screen.

"It's actually about a group of young people who are going to be inundated with this idea of fame and fortune and products and stuff, and within all that, how do you stay true to who you really are?" Chu explains. "That's the real soul of the movie."

Here's the official synopsis: "As a small-town girl catapults from underground video sensation to global superstar, she and her three sisters begin a one-in-a-million journey of discovering that some talents are too special to keep hidden. In Universal Pictures’ 'Jem and the Holograms,' four aspiring musicians will take the world by storm when they see that the key to creating your own destiny lies in finding your own voice."

Opening Oct. 23, "Jem and the Holograms" also stars Stefanie Scott as Kimber, Aurora Perrineau as Shana, Hayley Kiyoko as Aja, Ryan Guzman as Rio, Molly Ringwald as guardian Aunt Bailey and Juliette Lewis as Starlight Music record executive Erica Raymond.
