Morbius star Jared Leto is leaning into the speculation regarding Sony and Marvel Studios forming a multiversal Sinister Six as part of their shared Spider-Man film franchise.

Leto popped in to promote Morbius during Sony Pictures' presentation at CCXP Worlds 2021. "In the film version of Morbius that we're bringing to you now, he's also a part of a much larger universe," he said. "If you've seen the last Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer, you know the multiverse has officially opened -- and there's all kinds of opportunities for villains to meet up, thrive and maybe even nurture their more sinister intents. That's all I'm gonna say for right now."

With recent and upcoming projects in Marvel Studios' Marvel Cinematic Universe prominently featuring the multiverse, Spider-Man: No Way Home promises to break the forbidden door between realities wide open. The film's first teaser trailer confirmed that Spider-Man 2 alum Alfred Molina would be reprising his role as Dr. Otto Octavius/Doctor Octopus, as well as teased Willem Dafoe reprising his role as Norman Osborn/Green Goblin from 2002's Spider-Man.

The first full trailer for No Way Home not only doubled down on Molina and Dafoe's reprisals, but also confirmed The Amazing Spider-Man 2 alum Jamie Foxx's return as Max Dillon/Electro. Moreover, the trailer features the villains Sandman and Lizard, who were played by Thomas Haden Church in Spider-Man 3 and Rhys Ifans in The Amazing Spider-Man, respectively.

The fact that No Way Home features no fewer than five villains has naturally gotten people talking about the Sinister Six, an iconic team of Spider-Man rogues from the original Marvel comic books. After all, Sony Pictures has long attempted to get a Sinister Six-centric spinoff project off the ground, and some think No Way Home's lineup of villains could indicate those plans finally coming to fruition.

That being said, it remains to be seen if No Way Home's rogues gallery will remain a "Sinister Five," or if there is a sixth villain waiting in the wings. Some have theorized that Tom Hardy's Eddie Brock/Venom could be making an appearance, given the post-credits scene of Venom: Let There Be Carnage. With his new comments, however, it seems as though Leto could be throwing his hat into the ring as well.

Morbius, Leto's upcoming solo film, already appears to be embracing Sony and Marvel's shared Spider-Man universe. In the film's most recent trailer, Leto's Dr. Michael Morbius name-drops Venom while confronting an adversary. Additionally, the film is expected to see Michael Keaton reprise his role as Adrian Toomes/Vulture from the 2017 MCU film Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Spider-Man: No Way Home swings into theaters on Dec. 17, followed by Morbius on Jan. 28, 2022.
