In “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” audiences got their first glimpse of the Justice League, including the King of the Sea himself. During an interview with LA Times, director James Wan — who will helm the solo “Aquaman” film — described his vision for the movie and explained Warner Bros.’ approach to the DCCU.

“I would love to capture the fun spirit of high-sea adventures, treasure hunts, sea monsters. That’s the spirit that I’m going for. Swashbuckling,” he revealed.

Zack Snyder is ‘Helping Out’ on Solo “Aquaman” Film, Says James Wan

“Like [director] Zack [Snyder] said, from Day One, Warner has always said to me that we are a filmmaker-driven studio and we want each of the DC characters to have the stamp and the trademark of the filmmakers that they’ve picked to come shepherd it,” he explained. “As I’ve always said, whether it’s at Marvel or at DC, they have that sandbox. That sandbox is in place. So you have to come in there and play within their sandbox. But the key here is to build your own sandcastle. And make that sandcastle yours.”

“Aquaman” is part of Warner Bros.’ burgeoning DC Comics-based film franchise, which started in 2013 with “Man of Steel.” The film stars Jason Momoa, who debuted in the role in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.” According to a previous report, the film will “focus on Aquaman as a reluctant ruler of the underwater kingdom of Atlantis who is caught between land dwellers that are always polluting the globe and his own people who are ready to invade the surface.”

Additionally, Momoa will likely star in both “Justice League” films, which are scheduled for 2017 and 2019. The solo “Aquaman” film is scheduled to premiere on July 27, 2018.

Directed by Zack Snyder and starring Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill and Gal Gadot, “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” — the next DC Cinematic Universe installment — is now playing in theaters.
