If you saw the "Justice League" sizzle reel this past summer, then you know it suggested that Jason Momoa's Aquaman would be a hard-drinking, hard-living loner. But James Wan, the director behind the upcoming "Aquaman" solo film, said he's aiming for a "classic action-adventure-romance" for Aquaman and his partner Mera, played by Amber Heard.

“It starts off initially with them not quite clicking with each other," Wan said, in an interview with Bustle. "But then as the story progresses as they learn to try and work together, they get closer and closer. I think those stories are always such a great place for a filmmaker like myself to have fun with my actors."

Mera and Aquaman will first appear in Zack Snyder's 2017 "Justice League" before starring in Wan's "Aquaman" in 2018. Wan described "Aquaman" as a combination of "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and "Romancing the Stone," but that doesn't mean Mera will be a damsel. "Amber’s character is super strong," Wan said, "She’s very powerful as well. You don’t wanna mess with her."

DC and Warner Bros. have already released a teaser photo of Heard suited up in her fierce "hydrokinetic" costume, and Wan spoke about what she would bring to the role. "I think Amber will bring that sense of strength, but at the same time, we also want someone who has a sort of feminine quality to her as well," Wan continued, "She’s a bit of a contrast to Momoa, who’s more of a muscular machine almost." Momoa has certainly shown off his muscles in the ramp-up to "Justice League," including smashing an Aquaman ice sculpture while shirtless.

“Justice League” hits theaters on November 17, 2017, and “Aquaman” opens July 27, 2018.
