Many of us have lost track at this point of how long brother filmmakers Bobby and Peter Farrelly have been trying to make a big screen return for The Three Stooges happen. I’m more interested in their ensemble sketchfest Movie 43, as the world is a lesser place without new movies in the vein of Amazon Women on the Moon and Kentucky Fried Movie being brought into it.
A Stooges revival will happen at some point, though, and it’s looking much more likely now. Deadline reports that Will Sasso (Mad TV) is a lock for Curly, Hank Azaria is “a frontrunner” for Moe and — oddly — James Marsden (X-Men) is the name being heard most for Larry. The casting is expected to be confirmed by the end of this week, though given that Sean Penn, Jim Carrey, Benicio del Toro, Paul Giamatti, Andy Samberg, Johnny Knoxville and Shane Jacobson are all names that have been tossed around, it’s probably safest to just not count on anything.
The planned movie will follow the three-short format of classic Stooges films, with a trio of 27-minute vignettes in which Larry, Moe and Curly get themselves into trouble. It could be brilliant with the right cast. Azaria, who can play anything, and Sasso, who can definitely play Curly, are perfect. I’m not as sure about Marsden, but if the Farrelly bros go for him then I’m on board, too. Not every film they’ve done has been a hit, but they’ve at least earned the benefit of the doubt.
