Director and writer James Gunn has some bad news for fans of Marvel's resident Earthbound space-cop Nova. /Film has noticed one Facebook comment amongst the hundreds posted on Gunn's recent update regarding the shared universe model of filmmaking. The comment from Gunn reveals that the man behind 2017 "Guardians of the Galaxy" sequel does not plan to bring Richard Rider to the big screen.

"I don't want Nova right now because I think Quill being the only earthling is important," wrote Gunn. "That serves the entire movie going audience and not just the handful of Nova fans. Sorry if that upsets you."

The comment from Gunn came in response to one fan's assertion that the director refused to include Richard Rider -- Marvel's original Nova -- because of his bucket-shaped helmet. While Gunn did not include Rider in 2014's "Guardians of the Galaxy," he did include the wider Nova Corps, bucket helmets and all. Gunn also included several non-Earthling Novas from the comics, including Rhomann Dey (John C. Reilly), Garthan Saal (Peter Serafinowicz) and Irani Rael (Glenn Close).

Richard Rider first appeared in 1976's "Nova" #1. He became a fixture of Marvel's cosmic line of comics while also joining the Earthbound team of superheroes called the New Warriors. Rider then played an important part in the "Annihilation" comic book events that spawned the modern iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy; in the comics, Peter Quill returned from decades spent in obscurity to serve as Rider's righthand man. A new Nova, a teenager named Sam Alexander, has recently risen to prominence in the Marvel Universe thanks to his own ongoing series and his supporting role in the "Ultimate Spider-Man" cartoon series.

"Guardians of the Galaxy 2" opens on May 5, 2017.
