The Guardians of the Galaxy's second big screen adventure has yet to hit theaters and fans are already eagerly awaiting to learn if there will be a third installment in the franchise. Those expectations were most recently stoked by a comment from "Guardians of the Galaxy" franchise writer/director James Gunn, who previously hinted that a "Vol. 3" could very well be in play at Marvel Studios.

But, Gunn warns, people shouldn't get their hopes up just yet. Following those comments made earlier this week, the filmmaker added more context to his statement in a Q&A session with Yahoo! Movies.

“There are no specific plans for 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,'” he said. “But we know unless something goes horribly -- which is always possible, you never know -- I think that Marvel would want to make another movie. [Marvel chief] Kevin Feige a year-and-a-half ago said, ‘Yeah, one of our things that we’d be thinking about will be a 'Guardians 3.''"

Gunn also told Yahoo! that he does want to make another big movie following "Guardians Vol. 2" -- and that a third "Guardians" could be that film. "I love making big movies, that’s my thing. It’s not about wanting to go back and tell the story of a diseased toe for $5,000. I would like to make another big movie. So is that 'Vol. 3' or not? Is that the thing I’d want to do next or not? I don’t know, we’re talking about it. We’re figuring things out. And we’ll see where it goes. I’m excited about where the Guardians are gonna go, I’m excited about what they can do, and I have a thousand ideas for where the characters would go and the things they would do and what would happen next.”

Gunn previously talked about a third entry in the "Guardians" franchise in an interview with Complex. “There will be a ‘Guardians 3,’ that’s for sure. We’re trying to figure it out,” said Gunn. “I’m trying to figure out what I want to do really, that’s all it is. I got to figure out where I want to be, what I want to spend the next three years of my life doing. You know, I’m going to make another big movie; is it the Guardians or something else? I’m just going to figure it out over the next couple of weeks.”

Written and directed by James Gunn, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, and franchise newcomer, Kurt Russell, who plays Star-Lord’s father – Ego, the Living Planet. “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” arrives in theaters May 5.
