James Franco will star in 11/22/63, the nine-hour Hulu miniseries based on the bestselling time-travel thriller by Stephen King.

In the project, produced by J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot Productions and Warner Bros. Television, Franco plays Jake Epping, a divorced high-school English teacher who stumbles upon a time portal that takes him to 1958, where he sets out to prevent the Nov. 22, 1963, assassination of President Kennedy. However, his mission is threatened by Lee Harvey Oswald, romance and the past itself.

Although the adaptation is billed as an "event series," Deadline reports the video steaming service is open additional seasons, which might focus on other historic events.

Bridget Carpenter (The Red Road) wrote the adaptation and will executive produce alongside Abrams, King and Bryan Burk. Franco will serve as a producer.
