James Cameron Picks Shawn Levy To Direct 3D Fantastic Voyage

Back at the end of 2009, when Avatar was just about to hit theaters, filmmaker James Cameron dropped the news that he’d be producing a Shane Salerno-scripted remake of the 1966 film Fantastic Voyage, in which a team of shrunken-down scientists attempt to save a foreign dignitary’s life from inside his body. Now Deadline is reporting that Real Steel helmer Shawn Levy is set to direct after the script gets some polish from Laeta Kalogridis (Shutter Island).

Paul Greengrass was previously considered to be a top contender for the gig, but he was revealed to be out of the running last summer when it was announced that he would be working on an adaptation of the book Treasure Island. Jon Landau, who produced Titanic and Avatar with Cameron and who will return to produce Fantastic Voyage, told MTV in August that Greengrass just wasn’t the right fit for the project.

Deadline further reveals that Cameron met with several other directors, including Darren Aronofsky, Timur Bekmambetov, Jonathan Mostow and Louis Leterrier, before deciding with Fox on Levy. A diverse bunch to be sure, and Levy — whose credits include The Pink Panther remake, both Night at the Museum movies and Date Night — is a surprising choice, but Cameron generally seems to know what he’s doing. It also doesn’t hurt that, as remakes go, Fantastic Voyage is one of the juicier opportunities, what with almost half a century of technological advances spanning the time between the original release and today.
