Casting news for Fox's "Gotham" continues to surface with Entertainment Weekly reporting that Jada Pinkett-Smith has been cast as Fish Mooney, "a sadistic gangster boss and nightclub owner, she's got the street smarts and almost extra-sensory abilities to read people like an open book. Imposing and hotheaded, she's not one to be crossed." While no character named Fish Mooney currently appears in the DC Comics mythology, EW.com reports that the "Gotham" character is also the boss of Oswald Cobblepot, the man who eventually becomes The Penguin.

Pinkett-Smith's character is the first to deviate significantly from the Batman source material, with all previously-announced characters rooted in the Dark Knight mythos. The "Revolution" actress joins already-cast actors Ben McKenzie (Detective James Gordon), Donal Logue (Harvey Bullock), Zabryna Guevara (Captain Essen), Robin Lord Taylor (The Penguin), Sean Pertwee (Alfred Pennyworth) and Erin Richards (Barbara Kean).

"Gotham" marks Pinkett-Smith's return to television since the cancellation of "Hawthorne" in 2011. The actress is perhaps best known for her role in "The Matrix Reloaded" and "The Matrix Revolution" as Niobe.

Written by "The Mentalist" creator Bruno Heller, "Gotham" already has a series commitment from Fox with production on the pilot scheduled to begin March 17.
