New light is cast on the Tim Burton-directed Dark Shadows courtesy of Deadline, which reports that actors Jackie Earle Haley and Bella Heathcote are both in talks to join the horror remake of the popular 1960s gothic soap opera.
The upcoming film, with Johnny Depp attached to star, has long been in development with slow steps made over the past year. Warner Bros. bought the film rights in 2007, and just last July, author Seth Grahame-Smith came on board to pen a new script. Then in November, Deadline reported an April production start date. This latest news regarding Haley and Heathcote definitely fits in with that schedule.
The television series followed governess Victoria Winters and the Collins family, most notably Barnabas Collins, a 200-year-old vampire from England. The popular series ran from 1966 to 1971 and evolved to include all sorts of areas of fantasy and sci-fi — from werewolves and ghosts to time travel and parallel universes. The movie actually marks a second attempt at a remake, as in 1991, a new TV series premiered but lasted for just 12 episodes.
Depp will play Barnabas, while Deadline reports that Heathcote is the top choice for Victoria. Haley on the other hand is in talks for the role of Willie Loomis, a con artist whose failed attempt at robbing the Collins mansion ends with him becoming a servant to Barnabas.
