Days after Tom Clancy's death, the first trailer for the new Jack Ryan film, based on the author's popular character, has debuted online.

The trailer begins with a scene that will surely please anyone aspiring to mash together Star Trek and Game of Thrones, as the sometimes-Captain James Tiberius Kirk, actor Chris Pine, battles for his life against the erstwhile Xaro Xhoan Daxos, actor Nonso Anozie from Thrones' second season.

After his harrowing encounter, Ryan meets up with a veteran operative played by Kevin Costner. Ryan has knowledge of an impending attack on Americans, leading Costner's agent to declare: "You're not just an analyst anymore. You're operational."

The action leads Ryan to Moscow, where he meets, among others, a menacing Kenneth Branagh — the film's villain and its director. Also along for the ride is Pirates of the Caribbean veteran Keira Knightley as Ryan's girlfriend, somehow sucked into the world of espionage as well.

"They will bring us to our knees without even firing a shot," Ryan warns of the threat he faces in the film. Costner concurs: "There's a very real scenario where we don't get out of this alive."

Directed by Kenneth Branagh, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit hits theaters on Dec. 25.
