Official Press Release
SAN FRANCISCO (April 29, 2003) Respected San Francisco retailer James Sime announced today that he’s partnering with Absence of Ink publisher Ed Irvin to bring Free Comic Book Day to the entire planet. “As FCBD is such an inclusive celebration of the art form, Ed and I wanted to do something that would include even people who can’t come into the Isotope,” said Sime. “Not everyone has access to a comic book store that participates in FCBD and many members of the comic reading public don’t have access to a comic book store AT ALL. So the Isotope, in conjunction with Absence of Ink, is BRINGING FREE COMIC BOOK DAY TO THE PEOPLE. It doesn’t matter who you are or where you live, you CAN be a part of this international celebration of comic books! This year EVERYONE can participate in FCBD!”
“The way we are going to achieve this is simple,” Sime continued. “Starting at midnight Pacific time anyone who sends their mailing address to
on the day of May 3rd will be sent a copy Pop Gun War #1 ABSOLUTELY FREE OF CHARGE.”
Randomly inserted in some of these packages will be autographed editions of some of Isotope’s other favorite comics, exclusive sketches from some of the best artists working in comics today, and the cream of the current mini-comic crop.
“Free Comic Book Day is an exciting industry-wide event with a focus on introducing new people to the thing I love most…COMIC BOOKS!” said Sime. “This annual sequential art celebration is a terrific opportunity to bring together comic readers the world over. It’s a cool thing knowing that while we are having a party to honor comic books at the Isotope here in San Francisco that stores in Australia are doing the exact same thing at the exact same time. As usual, the promoters behind FCBD have done a fantastic job with the Herculean task of coordinating the media and getting the word out on this event.”
“As good as 2002’s was, this year’s FCBD is going to BLOW IT AWAY,” said Sime. “Our in-store event features a wider variety of FCBD titles, creator appearances, and an exclusive sneak-peek at Kieron Dwyer’s original art pages from the upcoming original graphic novel Last of the Independents (AIT/Planet Lar). Our featured special guest this year is S. Edward Irvin, the creative juggernaut behind the trend-setting independent publisher Absence of Ink. We will be spotlighting Absence of Ink’s entire Eisner-nominated line and giving away free copies of Forlorn Funnies (Best New Series, Best Coloring), Pop Gun War and Rob Vollmar’s brilliant Castaways trade paperback (Best Single Issue/One Shot).”
