We’ve seen suggestions that Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel might be inspired by DC Comics’ Superman: Secret Origin or Superman: Birthright, but now the Superman Homepage has what may be an official, if not necessarily final, synopsis for the Warner Bros. franchise reboot.
The fan site got its hands on the casting call for extras on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, which contains this overview:
In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time. Clark Kent/Kal-El (Cavill) is a young twentysomething journalist who feels alienated by powers beyond anyone’s imagination. Transported to Earth years ago from Krypton, an advanced alien planet, Clark struggles with the ultimate question – Why am I here? Shaped by the values of his adoptive parents Martha (Lane) and Jonathan Kent (Costner), Clark soon discovers that having super abilities means making very difficult decisions. But when the world needs stability the most, it comes under attack. Will his abilities be used to maintain peace or ultimately used to divide and conquer? Clark must become the hero known as “Superman,” not only to shine as the world’s last beacon of hope but to protect the ones he loves.
It’s in keeping with the broad plot of 2003’s Birthright, which followed Clark Kent as a globe-trotting young freelance reporter who, after using his powers in West Africa, returns to Smallville to learn more about his Kryptonian heritage. Clark later adopts his civilian disguise and moves to Metropolis where he lands a job at the Daily Planet. He also comes into conflict with Lex Luthor, who’s revealed to have a history with Clark, and an apparent Kryptonian invasion force.
There’s been no hint that Man of Steel has cast anyone in the role of Lex Luthor, and in Birthright “apparent” is the key word in describing the force. Perhaps — if the casting call is accurate, of course — the story by Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer replaces Luthor and his Kryptonian hoax with an actual attack by General Zod and Faora.
Filming is under way in the Chicago area, and will move to British Columbia on Sept. 21, where it will continue through Jan. 20, 2012.
Man of Steel stars Henry Cavill as Superman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Michael Shannon as General Zod, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent, Julia Ormond as Lara Lor-Van, Russell Crowe as Jor-El, Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, Antje Traue as Faora, Harry Lennix as General Swanwick and Christopher Meloni as Col. Hardy. The film opens June 14, 2013.
