Sam Rockwell is hearing voices, and they're telling him to join the cast of Poltergeist. But where are they coming from? Angry spirits wanting revenge for burial ground-related offenses? Nope, according to TheWrap, they're from MGM, Fox 2000 and director Gil Kenan.

The actor is reportedly in early talks to play an analog to Craig T. Nelson's character from the original Tobe Hooper film. If a deal can be made, Rockwell will join Mad Men actress Rosemarie DeWitt in retelling the tale.

TheWrap described the role in more detail:

Should a deal work out, Rockwell would play the patriarch of the Bowen family -- they were the Freeling family in the original -- whose lives are uprooted when youngest daughter Madison (originally Carol Anne) is abducted by supernatural forces that trap her in the netherworld between life and death.

The film is a remake of the classic 1982 haunted house story, with Sam Raimi producing and Monster House helmer Kenan set to direct based on a script by Lindsay-Abaire (Oz the Great and Powerful). In June, the studios also said filming was expected to begin this fall and a general 2014 release.
