"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" writer/director James Gunn has posted a new picture to Facebook, and it features one of the most prominent items in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe: Thor's hammer Mjolnir.

While this is far from confirmation that the Asgardian will have a part to play in "Guardians 2," there's still a little bit of context to unpack. It's not like a Thor cameo in the "Guardians" sequel would be completely unexpected. After all, we got our first glimpse of Marvel's cosmic side in the mid-credits scene of 2013's "Thor: The Dark World." Marvel's Norse gods are definitely aware of the existence of extraterrestrial life. And we know that the next Thor film, 2017's "Thor: Ragnarok," will take place mostly off-Earth and on other planets. It sounds like "Thor: Ragnarok" will be as cosmic as "Guardians of the Galaxy," so a crossover isn't unlikely. Both films also arrive in 2017, so it's also possible that a scene -- maybe a mid-or-post-credits scene -- in "Guardians Vol. 2" will lead into "Thor: Ragnarok."

Still, as it stands, this is a picture of James Gunn with Mjolnir, and no official word has been given by Gunn or Marvel to connect "Guardians" with "Thor" -- at least not yet.

"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" arrives in theaters on May 5, 2017.
