The Dark Tower producer Brian Grazer dropped a bombshell during the Golden Globes when he said that the actor coming on board as Roland Deschain would be revealed within a week. Over a week later and still zip, but we can at least add another name to the mix of candidates: none other than Globes winner, Oscar nominee and probable winner Christian Bale.
The New York Post says that Bale isn’t just joining Viggo Mortensen and Javier Bardem’s names on the shortlist, he’s also “pulled ahead” of his competitors as the likeliest man for the job. It’s definitely not bad casting; after all, Bale excels in these darker, brooding kinds of roles. But he’s played that part many times before, and after seeing him in The Fighter, one can’t help but hope for more similarly “loud” performances from the actor.
That said, anyone who knows Bale as John Preston from Equilibrium is surely frothing at the mouth to see what the actor could do as Roland. And that’s not even mentioning Bale’s dedication to the craft, having lost and gained and lost and gained monumental amounts of weight for his various film roles. A proven workhorse and a veteran of huge franchises including Batman and The Terminator, Bale should have no trouble pushing through three films and two seasons of television. I’m still Team Viggo, but as far as runners-up go, we could do far worse than Bale.
