In “The Wrong Side,” I examine comic book fights that were particularly notable in the wrong side winning (or at least that the fight wasn’t won the “right” way). This really isn’t a big deal, of course, as it doesn’t really matter if the “wrong” person won a fight. But it’s fun to talk about! Here are our past editions of the feature.
If you want to suggest a fight for future inclusion in this feature, drop me a line at email@example.com. Don’t suggest a fight in the comments!
Today, based on a suggestion by reader David P., we look at the time that Nercules couldn’t knock Iron Man out without even having his helmet on!
Now, normally the first step is to check out how the heroes do against Spider-Man, but that’s tricky here, since Spider-Man has never punched Iron Man without his helmet (it would probably be a bloody pulp, if he did) and I don’t believe Spider-Man ever fought this specific edition of Hercules, who WAS notably weaker than peak Hercules.
Therefore, the better explanation of this specific Hercules’ power level is to look at a fight Hercules had against Hulk in a one-shot in 1996 by Peter David and Mike Deodato…
Clearly, the Hulk had the advantage, as he should, but Hercules throws some mighty punches there, right?
And yet check out Avengers #393 (by Terry Kavanagh and Mike Deodato)…
Even if you want to argue that he pulled his punch a bit, it still should have easily knocked Tony Stark out! It really made no sense, and it merited easy inclusion in the annals of The Wrong Side (David also added that it’s funny that the Wasp felt that she needed to defend Hercules from a repulser blast that he presumably would have taken a lot better than she did).
Thanks to David for suggesting this one! If anyone else out there has a suggestion for a fight that you think the “wrong” side won, drop me a line at firstname.lastname@example.org!
