Not exactly a fan-favorite chapter of the beloved action-adventure franchise, 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull introduced the world both to Indy’s son Mutt Williams, played by Shia LaBeouf, and the derisive term “nuking the fridge.” It’s difficult to say which was disliked more by audiences, but needless to say there was more than a little concern that LaBeouf was being positioned to eventually inherit the fedora and whip from an aging Harrison Ford.
Director Steven Spielberg and producer Frank Marshall long ago quashed speculation that Lucasfilm would recast Indiana Jones for the planned fifth film, but we were left wondering what would happen to Mutt, last seen donning the signature fedora before (now appropriately enough) it’s snatched away by his father. So, where will Indiana Jones 5 find young mutt, when it finally arrives?
Well, it turns out it won’t.
“Harrison plays Indiana Jones, that I can certainly say,” screenwriter David Koepp told Entertainment Weekly. “And the Shia LaBeouf character is not in the film.”
Beyond that Koepp, unsurprisingly, offered little in way of details, teasing only that the plot will involve “some precious artifact that they’re all looking for.”
Earlier this year Disney staked out a July 10, 2020, release date for the film, a year later than the original target. There’s no date yet for the start of production, but Koepp indicated that Indiana Jones 5 could be Spielberg’s next project, after he completes work on his Pentagon Papers drama The Post.
